Statistical Works & Mathematical Models

What subject headings are used on statistical works and/or mathematical models?
According to the LC Subject Cataloging Manual (H2095) , the heading Statistics and related headings and subdivisions are assigned to works consisting of or discussing numerical data or methods of compiling and using the data.

Guidelines for assigning this heading and related headings and subdivisions:

  • 1. Statistics
    • a. General. Assign the heading Statistics to general works consisting of or discussing statistics not limited to a particular topic or place or to general works on methods of compiling, studying, and using statistics.
    • b. Special. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Statistics under names of countries, cities, etc., individual corporate bodies, classes of persons, ethnic groups, and topical headings, for works consisting of or discussing statistics about these subjects. Code the subdivision as a $v subfield for works consisting of statistical data and as an $x subfield for works discussing statistical data.
      • Please notethat this use of two different subfields for the same term is used throughout the Library of Congress subject headings.
        • Whenever a term is coded as subfield “v” it means that the term reflects what the book is; whenever a term is coded as subfield “x” it means that the term reflects what the book is about. Therefore “$v Statistics” means the book consists of statistics on the subject, and “$x Statistics” means the book is discusses statistics on the subject, but does not actually contain any statistics. Likewise a book coded “$v Bibliography” means the book is a bibliography on the subject. Whereas a book coded “$x Bibliography” means the book is about bibliographies on the subject.
          • Examples:
          • 650 #0 $a Asian Americans $x Statistics. (This book is about statistics on Asian Americans, but does not contain statistics.)
          • 610 20 $a Catholic Church $x Statistics.
          • 650 #0 $a Construction industry $v Statistics. (This book consists of statistics on the construction industry.)
          • 650 #0 $a Indians of North America $x Statistics.
          • 650 #0 $a Universities and colleges $v Statistics.
  • 2. Statistical methods.
    • Assign the free-floating subdivision –Statistical methodsunder topics to works on statistical or probabilistic methods as applied to the topic.
      • Examples:
      • 650#0 $a Human population genetics $z South Asia $x Statistical methods.
      • 650#0 $a Nucleotide sequence $x Statistical methods.
      • 650#0 $a Sex ratio $x Statistical methods.
  • 3. Vital statistics.
    • a. General . Assign the heading Vital statistics to works consisting of or discussing birth, marriage, and/or death statistics and to works on methods of compiling, studying, and using these statistics.
    • b. By place or ethnic group.
      • (1) General’. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Statistics, Vital under names of countries, cities, etc., or under individual ethnic groups for works consisting of or discussing vital statistics from these places or pertaining to these groups. Code the subdivision as a $v subfield for works consisting of statistical data and as an $x subfield for works discussing statistical data.
        • Examples:
        • 651#0 $a Great Britain $x Statistics, Vital $x History $y 19th century.
        • 650#0 $a Hmong (Asian people) $v Statistics, Vital.
        • 650#0 $a Mexican Americans $z California $v Statistics, Vital.
      • (2) Both . Assign a heading of the type [name of ethnic group]–[place]–Statistics, Vital and a heading of the type [place]–Statistics, Vitalto works consisting of or discussing statistics pertaining to an ethnic group in a particular place.
        • Examples:
        • 650#0 $a Navajo Indians $z Arizona $v Statistics, Vital.
        • 651#0 $a Arizona $v Statistics, Vital.
    • c. By name of war. Assign headings of the type [Name of war]–Casualties–Statisticsunder individual wars for works consisting of or discussing statistics of military personnel injured, killed, captured, etc., during the war.
      • Example:
      • 650#0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Casualties $x Statistics.
  • 4. Statistical services
    • Use under names of countries, cities, etc., and under topical headings for works on services that collect numerical data located in those places or about those topics.
      • Examples:
      • 651#0 $z United States $x Statistical services.
      • 650#0 $a Transportation $z United States $x Statistical services.

Mathematical models

According LC Subject Cataloging Manual

Mathematical model (H2040)

  • Mathematical models are used as a topical subdivision under topical headings for works that discuss the simulation of a particular system, process, or concept using mathematical theories.
    • Examples:
    • 650#0 $a Construction industry $x Mathematical models.
    • 650#0 $a Inflation (Finance) $z United States $x Mathematical models.
    • 650#0 $a Capitalism $z Russia (Federation) $x Mathematical models.
